We see, in the center of the frame, a white man wearing dark sunglasses and a sleek gray suit of probably American or European origin. In keeping with this week's informal theme of looking and reading, let's scrutinize the screen grab above. The long arc of each season of Burn Notice consists of Westen's efforts to get himself back in the CIA's good graces. To do this he draws upon his prodigious spy skills and inexhaustible resourcefulness. The short arc of each episode of Burn Notice consists of him helping some innocent who's being threatened by a gang or has been bilked by a con man or whose child has been kidnapped by a bad guy (the terms good guy and bad guy come up a lot in the Manichean world of this show). They have frozen Westen's accounts, revoked his passport, and banished him to Miami. The deciders at the CIA have ousted Donovan's character, Michael Westen, who worked freelance for them, because they've been led to believe he has done something bad, not regular spy bad but, presumably, against-America's-national-interests bad. He came from an abusive family and missed his estranged father’s funeral by eight years. Besides Fiona Glenanne, a semi-retired IRA explosives expert, he only had two known contacts in Miami: Lucy Chen and Sam Axe (in addition to his mother Madeline.) Pretty much everyone except Sam calls him 'Michael.' Sam frequently shortens it to 'Mikey' and gets away with it. Unconscious after the beating he took, the airline personnel would only say 'they were told' to bring him back to Miami where he regained consciousness in a sleazy hotel by a kick in the butt from his 'emergency contact' he had stopped dating years before. One day he graduated and 'poof' he was gone. The son of Frank and Madeline Weston, he lived in Miami until age 17 when his mother forged her husband’s name on a permission document so he could join the military. No small event in that line of work, which got him severely beaten and nearly killed. Michael Westen is a more than simply-average, field-operative spy, but he was notified that he had been “burned” while in the middle of a mission in Warri Nigeria.
